About Our School:

Since 1991, Horizons K-8 has offered a relationship-based and engaging program where students consistently meet or exceed rigorous academic and behavioral expectations. With a balanced focus on high academic expectations and individual attention to the whole child, our committed teachers guide students to become self-directed learners and community contributors in a respectful and caring environment. Student-led family conferences, portfolios, and performance based assessments keep learning relevant and authentic. Our high interest curriculum offers a variety of developmentally appropriate academic experiences both inside and outside the classroom, including outdoor education, service learning, performances, arts and sciences, and Spanish instruction school wide. In recognition of high academic achievement by students and the consistent hard work of an innovative and dynamic staff, Horizons has repeatedly been awarded the Colorado Department of Education John J. Irwin School of Excellence Award.

Principals Message:
Horizons K-8 is a charter school in Boulder Valley School District. Students at Horizons are guided to become self-directed learners and community/global contributors in a respectful, caring, inclusive learning environment. High academic and behavioral expectations for students in kindergarten through eighth grade are maintained through integrated, relevant curriculum that honors personal interests, individual learning styles, choices and goals. Learning is maximized by adjusting time, space, staff roles, policies, procedures and curriculum as needed. Every decision is intended to positively impact student progress. Thus, our students achieve high academic success. In recognition of our students’ high levels of academic proficiency we have repeatedly been named a Colorado “School of Excellence.” Small (18 students) multi-age classes, individualized goal setting, an emphasis on quality work, service learning, Spanish language, student choice, outdoor education, performance opportunities, and meaningful community participation characterize the school.

Horizons K-8 has grown from a district-sponsored “pilot” of 92 elementary students in 1991 to 324 K-8 students in 2009-2010. The program transitioned from a "pilot" to a focus school in 1994, and to a district charter school in 1997. The faculty continuously evaluates our educational approaches to implement “best practices” for teaching academics and addressing the needs of the whole child. Our daily schedule and yearly calendar provide significant blocks of shared and individual planning time for our teachers, and hour-long conferences with every family twice a year. At Horizons, shared beliefs and careful planning add up to academic excellence and focused, engaging classroom experiences for our students.
