About Our School:
About Our School
From the moment you walk into Mesa, you notice genuine warmth between teachers, staff, and families. The critical attribute that distinguishes Mesa from other schools is our strong sense of community. In addition, we are a nationally recognized, award-winning school with an emphasis on providing a KG-5 experience that is integrated across subject areas and grade levels. Our challenging academic program is enhanced by a rich curriculum. Some parents recently said, “We chose Mesa for its excellence, but we fell in love with this school for its commitment to our children.”
Mesa is a high-achieving elementary school nestled against the mountains in south Boulder.
Mesa is a “Triple A+” school that balances academics, arts, and athletics.
We offer our students a wide scope of learning opportunities. Our school has been awarded the John J. Irwin Award for Excellence as an outstanding school of distinction.
Academics are a high priority. Teachers use formative assessment practices to monitor student progress, provide descriptive feedback, and actively engage students as learners. Differentiation of instruction is woven into the structure of the day in all subject areas to meet the individual needs of the learners. Talented and Gifted (TAG) programs, learning center assistance, literacy, math and technology support are designed to help students discover their strengths and talents.
Special Programs and Opportunities
Mesa offers students a wide variety of special programs and activities related to academics, arts, athletics, cultural, and community activities. We encourage parents and children to take advantage of these opportunities that are available in our school. A sampling of those opportunities follows:
Junior Great Books
Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming
Grade-level Music Programs
M&Ms Vocal Choir
Jump Rope for Heart
5th Grade Outdoor Education
Mesa is a Human Rights Campaign Seal of Excellence Welcoming School. This means that we value the success of each student and every student. We invite you to visit Mesa and learn more about us. Mesa is a high achieving school. We have earned the John J. Irwin Colorado Schools of Excellence Award based on Mesa students’ outstanding academic performance. Annually, Mesa is designated as an excellent school by the State Department of Education. Mesa has also been a recipient of the Colorado Alliance for Arts “Creative Ticket – School of Excellence" Award. The fabulous parent community values education of the whole child, and the arts and athletics are important components of our educational program.
Mesa is one of only a few elementary schools in the United States to receive the National Schools of Distinction Award from the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes schools that have done an “outstanding job of making arts an essential part of the education of their students.” In addition to their remarkable achievement in class activities, Mesa students demonstrate their achievement in the arts through participation in our Art Shows; KG-4 grade music performances; and the M&Ms' production of musicals such as Aladdin, Annie, HONK, and Lion King. In athletics, running the BolderBoulder with Fitness Club is a remarkable success each year. The critical attribute that distinguishes Mesa from other schools is our strong sense of community.
As you visit our school, note the number of parent volunteers. Watch how they interact with teachers. Look at the smiles and hear the laughter. Notice the tangible affection between adults and children and among the children themselves. You are seeing people who feel like family; children and adults are valued and loved at Mesa. We welcome you to join our community.
Josh Baldner, Principal
