About Our School:
Nederland Elementary School (NES) is nestled on a hillside among the pine and aspen trees of the Roosevelt National Forest and faces the jagged peaks of the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area to the south. The beauty of our setting is second only to the excellent quality of education offered to the students of Nederland. NES is dedicated to high academic achievement and the growth of strong character for all children attending our school. As a neighborhood school, we believe in building working partnerships between our dedicated staff, highly-skilled teachers, involved parents, and the caring community of Nederland to ensure our students achieve to their potential.  This school also offers free and tuition preschool classes that have a focus on both academic and developmental learning standards.

Our academic program is well rounded in all content areas. We value STEM learning at Nederland Elementary and outdoor fitness and education are an emphasis at all grade levels. Our academic goals focus on implementing a new literacy curriculum, closing achievement gaps, and developing a safe and welcoming community at NES. We provide programs and interventions to support student learning at every level of performance and ability.  We remain committed to helping every child achieve their highest potential.

Nederland Elementary cares about all aspects of our students' development. We believe that all children are entitled to a safe, respectful learning environment. We are a Positive Behavior Support school with a strong belief in developing student character.  Our school-wide Panther PAWS (Perseverance, Act Responsibly, We Cooperate, and Show Respect) exemplifies many of our expected character traits. We also have weekly Brainwise social-emotional learning lessons (SEL) for all our students. As a result of a partnership with Teens, Inc., a community organization, we are fortunate enough to have an SEL expert teaching these lessons to each class.  Also through a Teens, Inc. grant, we have a Restorative Practices Coordinator who teaches children how to resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships with one another. At NES we also start every day with a school-wide "Moment to Pause" where every student practices mindfulness.

It is our promise to you that your child will receive an excellent education at NES. We are committed to educating the whole child in an environment that embraces families and children. We invite you to join our school community in helping all of our children meet their potential in every aspect of their development and learning.

Principals Message:

Greetings from beautiful Nederland, Colorado!  Nederland Elementary School educates about 280 children ranging from three years old to eleven, encompassing a preschool and grades kindergarten to fifth grade. We serve families who live in the mountains of Colorado at an elevation of 8,000 feet above sea level. Our families live in unique mountain settings with views of 13,000 foot peaks where wildlife abounds.  Our building was built in the side of a mountain and we are surrounded by National Forest land with trails and open space. The aspen trees are particularly beautiful in the fall when they turn a vibrant yellow.

Academically, we are in line with our counterparts in the rest of Boulder County.  Students are held to high expectations throughout the curriculum. Students have 90 minutes of literacy each day, 60 minutes of math and alternating science and social studies times depending on the unit of study. Our students have physical education, art or music every day for 45 minutes. We serve lunch at the school and students have recess time twice daily - once after lunch and then another recess in the morning or afternoon.

Our students also receive weekly instruction in social/emotional skills through a program called Brainwise. Students learn the brain science behind their emotions and reactions to different situations. We also have school-wide supports for positive behavior and resources to help students resolve conflicts with peers.  School-wide we engage in mindfulness every morning during our "Moment to Pause" recorded by a member of the parent community. Our students also engage in Restorative Practices to resolve conflicts and strengthen relationships with one another. We are so fortunate to partner with Teens Inc., a community organization, to empower students with these important skills.

We have many extra-curricular activities including sports, music, and drama. Our teachers host after-school basketball, volleyball and gymnastics during the winter and spring.  Students are also able to participate in after-school soccer through Peak to Peak Soccer and mountain biking through SMBA. Our buses will also bring students to programs in downtown Nederland at the public library, Wild Bear Nature Center and music lessons at Brightwood Music.  Our third, fourth, and fifth graders participate in overnight outdoor learning experiences. We also host annual art shows, science fairs, and other displays of student work. One of our most anticipated events is our Winter Adventure Days where students spend two days alpine skiing, snowboarding, or Nordic skiing at Eldora Ski Resort, just five miles from our campus.

We have a wonderful, engaged parent community and a fantastic PTA and SAC that help fundraise and make decisions around budget and programming for our school.  Parents also have many opportunities to volunteer in the classroom and throughout the school community.

If you have any questions about our school or would like a tour, please don't hesitate to reach out to me!

We, as a staff will make sure community is at the forefront.  Kids will always come first at our school and we believe that each child has a gift and purpose … no exceptions.

As a staff, we are committed to the students we serve, the Nederland community, and our school district.  Each day, we will make a deliberate choice to build a healthy school climate that nurtures staff and students.

We pledge that Nederland Elementary School will be a place where everyone is valued and connected to each other. It will be a place that is uplifting, accepting, friendly, giving, fun, and visionary.  As a staff, we will seek to impart the divergent character qualities that can be learned in this unique mountain setting to our students:

  • independence alongside connectedness,

  • boundless curiosity alongside mindfulness,

  • and grit alongside compassion.

Our core values have been created to guide the way in which we teach, serve, and build relationships. As a staff, we recognize that our sum is greater than individual parts.  If we are mindful of these core values, we can create something that is beautiful, together.

Nederland Elementary is a place for our hearts and souls and it is where we choose to be.  We want the joy and satisfaction of working in the best place in the world.

Nederland Elementary School’s Core Values

Core Value #1:

Lifelong Learning, Creativity, Fun, and Passion Matter

Learning is an adventure.  We want to be known for innovation, integration with the natural environment, and 21st-century learning. If teachers are passionate and creative, kids will have fun, learn, and foster their own lifelong curiosities.  We expect our students to learn each day – we will do the same.

Core Value #2:

Trust, Accountability, and Respect

Trust occurs through infinite communication and nurturing relationships.  We will do our best to communicate and be accountable to our agreements. We also accept the reality that we are human and mistakes will be made.  We will choose to forgive one another’s mistakes, commonly grow and learn together. We will respect the entirety of our school community by being open-minded and honest.  When conflicts arise, we will demonstrate respect by assuming positive intent, going to a singular source, and gracefully solving the problem at hand.

Core Value #3:

Focus on Consistent High Expectations of Teaching and Learning

We will consistently have high expectations of ourselves, our students, one another, and our community. Our school staff is responsible for defining high expectations and making sure those expectations are achievable, supported, and met.  Everyone will feel safe and students will thrive when we are consistent with these expectations. We will spend our energies focusing on questions that matter. We will choose to collaborate with one another in order to improve our professional practice.  Our collaborative efforts will lead to deep and broad positive impacts on learning and professional practice. We will affirm one another and remember that we are together in our challenges and celebrations.

Core Value #4:

Equality

At Nederland Elementary, the whole child matters.  We will foster each child’s individual spirit. This means that our work and our approach to work will reflect fair, just, and compassionate understanding and insight. We believe that all students should have the opportunity to feel success socially and academically.  As such, we acknowledge that each child’s pathway to success will be different and we will strive to understand each child’s unique needs.
